Prescription medications can be life saving but
are frequently very expensive. They are heavily
marketed and because they are frequently paid for my
health insurance the costs are frequently higher than
they would be if they were always paid for in cash.
The pharmaceutical companies will typically charge
whatever the local market will bear in a given
country which is why a drug sold in the US may cost
much more than the same drug from the same company in
another country. Because of this many people who
immigrate to the US may be able to save substantial
money by purchasing, or having their families
purchase, at least their chronic medications from
their countries of origin.
Another thing to know about prescription
medication costs is that generic medications are
almost always cheaper than brand names. Brand name
medicines are heavily marketed and generic
medications of equal or near equal effectiveness may
be forgotten by the prescribing provider unless you
make him or her aware of the fact you are concerned
about costs. Most providers will go out of their way
to make sure you get the most cost effective
medicines possible if you ask them
to.
Even when you have insurance with drug coverage,
the insurance companies will typically have preferred
brands of drugs in every category that will cost you
less than using a non-preferred brand or product.
When you take a prescription to the pharmacy ask the
pharmacist if there are alternatives that would be
cheaper with your insurance and most providers (your
doctor) will change the prescription. There are more
than 200 insurers and thus 200 sets of preferred
medications so no physician will remember what is
preferred by which insurer so to get your best deal
you need to ask the pharmacist.
Note that even with the same drug that the cost
of a prescription can vary significantly from one
pharmacy to another. If you have an expensive
long-term medication you should stop around for the
best price and should consider large retailers such
as Wal-mart or Publix as well as the chain drug
stores. Many patients save money by ordering their
prescriptions from online pharmacies typically buying
3-month supplies of medicine to save money by buying
in bulk.
Almost all pharmaceutical companies offer patient
assistance programs for patients who cannot afford
their medicines. These programs offer medicines for
free if you and your health care provider complete
paperwork documenting your medical need and your
inability to pay. Not all providers have the time or
inclination to complete this paperwork but many will
do this if you ask.
Finally, there has been a trend in the last year
or so for large retailers such as publix or Wal-mart
to heavily discount many generic medications. They do
this of course to get you in the store where you’re
likely to buy something other than the
medication.
